Writing
a diary is an excellent way to get to know who you are. Instead of spitting out
your thoughts, slowly writing down on a paper gives you time to think about
what you are writing, which is mostly about yourself. I keep a diary that has a
green hard cover with no lines. I write like I am talking to this diary. I
write my emotions, plans, and goals that I can not tell other people. Since I
began to start writing this diary, I got to know about myself as the diary
began to be filled with letters. Thus, this “Personal Description Report” is
like a diary through which I can know who I am better except I have to analyze
myself according to psychologist’s theory.
First
of all, my personality according to psychoanalytic approach can be explained by
Freud’s theory. Often, I try to escape form a situation even if I know I have
to go through it. According to Freud, it is because I have a weak ego that can
not hold the id. For example, at this school, I have an awkward relationship
with a friend. I know that I have to try to talk to her and improve our
relationship. However, because I am tired and busy I do not care about our
relationship. Plus, I use rationalization, a defense mechanism, to protect myself
from anxiety. In school, there are certain rules that we have to follow.
Recently, a rule that is not to wear school uniform cloak except Han-bok was
created. However, I do not keep this rule by justifying myself that since
everybody else doesn’t keep this rule, I do not have to keep it.
Furthermore,
the social-cognitive approach to personality explains the reason of my
behavior. I like taking care of other people. I give letters with small presents
to people. By doing this I feel happy because I get to know how much I care
about that person. This characteristic
can be explained by Bandura’s self-system. My self-system was established by
looking at my mother. She also likes to give presents with cards to other
people. By seeing my mother do this, I began to follow her which is now what I
like to do. Thus, smiling a lot is also what I learned from my mother.
I
did not like writing about myself until high school. Writing about me was very
difficult because I did not know who I was. However, entering this school, I
had to write club interview papers, introduction to seniors and teachers
introducing who I am. Every time I write a new essay, I began to learn more
about what I am. Thus, this personal description report helped me learn who I
am.
When I think about the word “Minjok”, this “Samdasoo" water bottle is the first thing that comes into my mind. This bottle and I met when I was 7 in United States. At then, I was extremely exhausted adjusting to a new culture. This water bottle which was in the middle of W-mart with other American water bottles grasped my attention. It was like me standing in a new country representing Korea. I opened the bottle and drank all of it. It tasted sweat and bitter at the same time. When we live abroad, we get attracted to objects related to Korea such as Korean food, song, and clothes. Everytime I get fascinated at these things, I get to think abut what "Minjok" means to me. "Minjok" is like a goal in my life. It is a goal that the past, present, and future generation unconsciously had in their minds which is to preserve our nation and develop "Minjok".
First, let’s look at how the term “Minjok”
has affected our history. Whenever Korea had to undergo wars between China or Japan and fights within the country, "Minjok" helped them to overcome this. Ancestors felt that they had to overcome hardships in order to preserve our "Minjok". For example, during the period of Japanese colonial rule, it was difficult for one to spread their personal wishes and goals. They could not freely do what they want. It was because we did not have a formal country so Japanese forcefully used our people and resources. Our ancestors could not bear this brutality and worked hard to regain Korea. They formed Korean liberation army and killed Japanese main officials such as the Shanghai Bombing. Plus, Ju Si-Gyeongrearranged Korean language and other scholars focused on organizing Korean history. Most of these people spend their entire life trying to obtain our country. However, they died before they could see an independent Korea. How could these people do this? It is because of "Minjok". Our ancestors did not want the future generation to experience the same pain they received because of not having a country. To conserve our "Minjok", ancestors put "Minjok" as their goal in life in the long term.
A Video of the Dangun Story, the Legend of constructing Korea
Second, our present society is going
through many changes because of “Minjok”. After Japan colonization, 6 25 war, Korea was economically, politically a mess. In the 1950s, Carl Rowan, a Readers Digest reporter said expecting democracy out of Korea would be like looking for a rose among trash. It seemed impossible for Korea to develop.
Despite these evaluation from the world, Korea is now 15th rank GDP and is a democracy country. This was mainly due to Park Jung-Hee dictatorship.
To unite Koreans and justify the sacrifice of many people during the industrialization, he used the Dangun story, the founding story of Korea. The legend of Dangun taught people that we all inherited from Heaven and that we are ethically all from one
blood. From this influence, when we want to express our opinion we gather together. There is a Korean maxim saying that “When we gather together we live. When we disperse we die” We argue that we have to gather together because we are one “Minjok”. Hundreds of people come together and protest such as the candlelight vigil. We combine ourselves to make a better "Minjok" and a better society.
A Video of the Candlelight Vigil that was opened from the May 15nd Seoul, Chonggyechon stream to oppose against U.S. beef exports.
Third, “Minjok” affects our personal goals.
As a future leader of the next generation, I want to help the the development of our “minjok” and
furthermore, world globalalization. According to "the Paradox of Korean Globalization" by Gi-Wook Shin, it states that globalization has not weakened nationalism in Korea. We are taught to be globalized and at the same time work for our "minjok". This is possible in Korea because "Minjok" leads us to work for globalization. I want to become a chemist. When I say this
people ask me what kind of chemist do I want to be, I answer that I want to be a chemist that can lift Korea’s name high. I want to
work for our “minjok” in the field of chemistry. While studying and researching
for this goal, our whole world will benefit. This is a common desire that most students in Korean Minjok Leadership Academy has.
All in all, “Minjok” is a goal in our life.
It is why we have to endure hardships and learn. By overcoming
hardships, we develop ourselves. The reason why we have to do this is because
we have to preserve and improve our “Minjok”. Wherever we are standing right
now, which can be right in front of your notebook monitor, or cleaning the snow, we
have to thank our ancestors who have brought us to that place. Our ancestors
and everybody around us has worked for “Minjok”. As an expression of gratitude,
we should spend our lives also working for “Minjok”. Have this “Minjok” in our
mind for the past, present, and the remaining future.
While zooming on Youtube, I found this video. This is a video made by a teenager who summarized the whole Harry Potter series in 99 seconds. It was very interesting and funny. Plus, while watching this I remembered about the play we had done about Harry Potter. With my two fellow classmates, Choi Soo Young, Kwon Jun Ho, we did this script. Unfortunately, I do not have the video of us, but this is the exact script we memorzed and performed in front of the audience. Hope you enjoy this!
Harry Potter and the KMLA Chamber of
Secrets
1. Role
Harry
Potter
Ron
Weasley
Hermione
Granger
2. Script
Narrator:
Before beginning, this story can make you cry, laugh, get angry and let you
experience several feelings. But most of all this will give you a great lesson.
With that in mind, now let’s start the play.
Harry and
Ron shouts and closes their book
Harry:
Gosh, I can't understand anything. Why should we memorize magic literature?
Ron: Yeah.
I hate literature. Last time I even stayed up whole night preparing but failed
on the test. Even though I studied, I got 35 on the quiz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hermione:
Ron, it's bad for your health to stay late at night. Furthermore, you can't
concentrate the day after. Instead of staying up the night, you should use your
time efficiently. You shouldn't cram.
Ron: Oh
Hermione,.....................
Hermione: OH...Ron.... This
is true. And studying is the only possible way that you can get good
scores..........
Harry: Unless..........
(thinking alone) nahh....this is impossible, impossible
Hermione: Unless what?
I’m sure you are not thinking about cheating. Cheating should never be done in
KMLA. Cheating is a crime (emphasizing) “A BIG crime!!”
Harry: I know but we
could just try. Can’t we? Ron and I can get a good score!
Hermione: No. You guys
can’t
Ron: (feeling gloomy), Yeah,
Hermione and I should live my whole life with Fs fulll in my report card. Oh
shoot!!!!!!!! Tomorrow's Mr. Yak Min Su's magic literature quiz and I would
definitely get F again. Oh God
Hermione: NO Ron… No…
Never.
(Seriously thinking for
a while with a confused expression) Yeah or maybe cheating just one time is not
a bad decision. Only once in your whole life. It would be a thrilling
experience for me. Yeah only once is okay! (Thinking again for a while and then
smiling) Then let's make this crime perfect. Perfect plan, perfect actions! (carefully)
For a perfect plan, we should examine Mr.Yak Min Su's daily routines and
habits. According to my insight, Mr. Yak Min Su always drinks beer before the
exam. I know this because he smells like beer at every test. I heard that Mr.
Yak Min Su reviews his exam paper in a drunken state. Plus, according to a
rumor, he keeps the exam paper where he drinks the beer. So, we should find out
the place where he keeps the paper before the test.
Ron, Harry: that sounds
like a work! We can do this perfectly!
Narrator: Harry, Ron,
and Hermione examine Mr. Yak every day. During class and after school, they
follow him secretly. Sometimes they disguise themselves and sometimes they just
pretend to ask him questions to find out about him.
Hermione: Good job
everyone! According to the information we had gathered until now, I made a
conclusion. I found out that he raises three pets and goes everywhere with
them. So, let's find out the clues from the pets.
Harry, Ron: Ewww..........
pets??
Harry: I am allergic to
dogs
Ron: I just hate cats
Hermionie: (exciting
voice) LOOK!!!!!!! I found these clues. By my sense and intelligence, we should
take three steps for cheating.
The first mission is translating
Spanish into Korean. Second one is solving a math problem. The last
mission is doing a tongue twister. When we finish these missions, the clues
that the pets give will lead us to the place where the exam paper is.
Ron: It sounds difficult............
Harry: But easier than
studying Magic Literature test! There is so much to memorize!
Ron: yeah.. LIterature
is so difficult. Let’s do this thing!
Hermione:
The first mission is to translate this. “ES major estudiar que enganar” "
ES major estudiar que enganar”, ES major estudiar que enganar” ES major
estudiar que enganar ES major estudiar que enganar”...........(fascinated to
the spell)
Harry: What
does this mean? To me it seems like a snake hissing!
Ron: I hate
snakes!
Harry: Ron,
you have so much animals you hate
Ron: Try
living with all sorts of pets of your family member! It’s terrible to just
listen to the sound of its’ name.
Hermione:
Oh, wait! I think I learned this spell from MRs. Hwang Hyung Ju teacher's
ancient magic language class. Es means I, major means hate
(Then,
suddenly a snake emerges in front of them)
Ron:
Hermione! Hurry up, please.
Hermione:
(surprised) This means “It is better to study than cheat”. This is a spell that
brought out the snake.
Harry:
Really! This is great
(The snake
spits a paper which has the word “Chung” written on it)
Hermione:
Maybe it is a hint! What will this mean?
(Then they
head to the owl's house)
Harry: The
second mission is a math question. What is 12345X54321? Ron! Why don’t you try?
Ron:
670592745
Hermione: no
you're wrong Ron!
Ron: no i'm
absolutely correct
(Owl :
OOO~WWUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU~~~~LLLLLLL
the owl
flies away through the sky and drops a piece of paper. The paper indicates a
letter ' MU )'
Harry: It
is the second hint! Now we have two hints, “Chung” and “Mu”
Hermione:
What can this be?
Ron: I have
no idea. Hermione, you're an intelligent girl, so what do you think this is?
Hermione:
hmmm. maybe it's a morse code. I could translate this into morse code. Wait a
second........... It says,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, it's better to give up than giving a
try. It looks like some kind of proverb but it is really nonsense.
Harry: it's
ridiculous. I think somebody's playing on us. There are some other students who
are also looking for the exam paper.
Ron : There
isn't any evidence. Who would think the same thing as us.? Your imagination
surprises me Harry
Harry: Ron.
Your imagination I mean nonsense always surprises me.
Hermione: Both
of you stop it. Harry might be right or wrong. We are not sure yet. But what we
are sure is that if we accomplish a mission, one of Mr. Yak’s pet will come and
give us a letter.
Harry:
Yeah. You are right, Hermione!
Ron: Now we
have one mission left. The last mission is to say a tongue twister. No need to
light a night light what is this?
Hermione:
no need to light a light night! What I can’t do it!
Harry: Oh! I like tongue twisters! I’ll try it. No need to light a night light
on a light night like tonight. I could do it again. No need to light a night
light on a light night like tonight.
Ron: Wow! I
knew you could do it
Hermione:
How did you do it? Hey guys look! There is a earwig
(Earwig
brings the letter 3)
Hermione:
Yes! All three hints, “Chung”, “Mu”, “Three”. What does this mean? It’s
defiantly not Morse Code.
Harry: Hey!
I think it means that the test is in Chung Mu third floor. If you arrange the
hints in order it matches.
Hermione:
Yes. Harry, I think you are right!
Ron: Sorry
for teasing you Harry! I’m glad to have you as a friend!
Narator:
Three of them run to Chung Mu Kwan. They are filled with pride and confidence
but I’m sure it won’t last long.
Ron: This
is the staircase! Let's go
Harry: I
can't wait to see the test
Hermione:
Guys, be quiet. We might get into big trouble if we get caught.
Harry:
First floor
Second
Floor
Third Floor
(Three of
them arrive at Chung Mu 3 floor)
Harry: Yes
we arrived.
Ron: Where
is Mr. Yak’s desk?
Harry: This
is Mr. Yak's desk. I saw him sit here before.
(Harry
slowly opens Mr. Yak's drawer. However, inside there is nothing but Girls’
Generation Poster.)
Ron: Hey!
Isn't this Girls' Generation? I love them. They are so pretty and lovely and
their songs are great. But where is the test?
Harry: There
is nothing but this poster. Nothing at all. I didn't know Mr. Yak liked Girls'
sGeneration
Hermione:
Harry, Ron! That is not the point. Where is it?
Harry: I
don't think the test is here
Ron: Me,
too
Hermione: I
can't believe we can't find the test with all these things we had to go
through. Three missions and meeting all sorts of Mr. Yak’s weird pets. How can
this happen to us?
Harry:
Chear up!
Hermione: I
am going to revenge. Mr. Yak likes Girls' Generation so let's scribble on this
poster
Harry&Ron:
Yeah let's do it
Harry: I
heard he especially likes Taeyon the most
Hermione:
I’ll draw the mustache on her.
Harry, Ron,
Hermione brings a pen and scribbles faces on the poster)
Narrator:
This story is eventually not a happy ending story. It's a tragedy. Why? Because
the next day, Harry, Ron, and Hermione gets zero point on their Magic
Literature test. Why again? The answer is obvious. They were so exhausted that
they slept right away that night. They could not study and also slept during
the test. Poor Harry, Ron, and Hermione. During the play, Harry, Ron, and
Hermione gave the audience a laugh, sorrow, anger. I hope this gives them a
lesson, too.
One by one, the grains of sand are falling down. From the
pile of sands, it is slowly falling by the curve side of the sandglass. The
speed of the sand flow is always the same. However, there are times when it
seems too fast or too slow. Especially, when you are waiting for a moment to
happen, time seems slow; but when it actually happens, time goes so fast like
the speed of a horse pooping (This is scientifically proven). Thus, this is
because of the anxious mind and the disappointment from the real moment. First of all, the nervous mind waiting for the incident to
happen makes it feel long. Whatever the incident is, the person waiting for it
is or expecting a result While waiting for it to happen, they prepare by thinking
what they could do in the situation like the character in the video. He bakes
the face, trims the clothes, and plays the violin for the girl to be alive.
During the exciting time, people get more desperate for it to really happen.
For example, waiting for the weekend feels so deadly. I construct plans, but it
is only Thursday. For the remaining two days, I desperately wish that Saturday
and Sunday would come. Hence, this anxious mind makes the waiting moment longer
than usual. Moreover, when the event happens, the disappointment makes
it feel very short. With a fast- heart beating mind, the event happens.
However, if it doesn't satisfy you or is something you did not expect, you get
depressed. Since people no longer have a high interest in it, it fastly fades
away. The sand in the sandglass drops so fast. For instance, my brother waited
desperately for the result of his first Lotto coupon. When he was selected, he
enjoyed his money the first few days but after then, he was bored. People
enticed him to use his money. It was not what he had planned and the moment
passed very fast. All in all, the time waiting for an action to happen seems
long because you are very nervous. On the other hand, when the action really
appears it feels short because of the dissatisfaction. Every sand in the
sandglass falls at the same speed but in some moments, it seems as if the sand
magically moves faster or slower. In addition, these moments continue because
you can flip the sandglass whenever you want. When it seems as if an incident
is about to end, the sandglass flips, and a new happening emerges.
